artist Heather Jansch creates amazing life-sized sculptures of a number of wildlife creatures. However, her main focus and most impressive work to date feature horses. Jansch is a self-professed horse lover. One day, out of the blue, she felt as if she was called upon to make a specific type of art – driftwood sculptures of animals.
She is constantly collecting driftwood and oak to create more sculptures and, when creating, tries to limit the amount of carving done so as to “retain the original texture.” Her large sculptures have an underlying steel frame that has been coated in fiberglass so as to hide the steel. She then attaches the wood, wiring the pieces to the frame before screwing them all into place and staining the piece. The hooves are usually made out of bronze but have sometimes been made out of the lead
Every work is impressive, whether featuring dynamic movement or the subject in repose. The proportions are very similar to their real-life counterparts. The texture and form of the driftwood only add another level to the pieces. Incredible!
